In the summer of 1976, Parks Canada conducted a preliminary survey directed by Patricia Sutherland, of one of the Franklin Expedition sites, and eleven sites associated with several of the relief expeditions sent to find him (Snow et al. 1977; Phillips Parmenter et al. 1977). A part of the material recovered was clay tobacco pipes of European manufacture, including ones from an English maker not, to this writer's knowledge, previously found in North America. A study of this pipe material was undertaken with two objectives in mind: (1) to supply supporting data on clay pipes as an aid to further excavation, and (2) to provide information for site interpretation. Evidence useful for social and economic interpretations are considered as the more productive approaches to pipe studies by the author.
