Shuswap Journey: The Simpew of the Secwepemic occupy the drainage of the North Thompson River downstream to Mclure. The Simpew traveled throughout the spring, summer and fall gathering food and materials which would sustain them throughout the winter months. During the winter months the people would assemble at various village sites along the river occupying semi-underground houses. The Simpew men were noted for their hunting and fishing ability. The women were noted and valued for their skills which varied from gathering and processing a variety of different foods from salmon, deer, moose meat, berries, plant foods to basket making, lodge building to whatever was required for their survival. There was active trading, and sometimes warfare with the Sekani and the Cree people, whereby captives would be taken at times. Such is one case which is the basis of the legend described in this book. Today most of the 500 Simpew live on North Thompson (also referred to as Chu Chua) Reservation just north of Barriere, British Columbia, Canada.
