I Am Eskimo: Aknik My Name: Fifty years ago, Inupiat Eskimo Paul Green witnessed the efforts of a writer who arrived in Green's village, stayed a day or two, then flew home to publish nonsense. Encouraged by Abbe Abbott, he wrote his own collection of authentic Eskimo stories in his distinctive, direct voice. Another notable Alaskan, George Aden Ahgupuk, added his pen-and-ink drawings to the collection, and the first edition of I AM ESKIMO was released in 1959, the same year that the Territory of Alaska became a state. In his collection, green wrote about his life, Native foods, legends, games, animal habits, even “rubbing nose kiss.” Each story is a delight.
