The strongest chapters of this biography describe Freeman's career as a journalist, her connections with Lady Aberdeen and the National Council of Women in Canada, and her time in the Yukon. There is one fundamental flaw, however - Downie's attempt to romanticize her subject through conjecture in the absence of solid evidence. It would have been better if she had made more extensive use of her already respectable list of historiographical and secondary studies to form a better understanding of Freeman and her career in the context of what we already know of women's lives during that era.
