In 1789 Alexander Mackenzie set out from Lake Athabasca in search of the Pacific Ocean. He travelled by birchbark canoe with a cache of rum and a crew of voyageurs for company. Two centuries later Robert Twigger follows in his wake.
Having painstakingly made a canoe from birchbark sewn together with pine roots and assembled a crew of fellow travellers and ex-tree-planters he set out.
Twigger's crew were the first to successfully complete Mackenzie's route in a birchbark canoe since 1793.
Subsisting on a diet of porridge, elk and jackfish supplemented with whisky and a bag of grass for the tree-planters the voyageurs embark on an epic road trip. Only by canoe, mainly on the water. Along the way they meet descendants of Mackenzie, unhinged Canadian trappers as well as bears brown and black.
They run out of food, get lost, get found again and get disfigured for life (one of the crew loses a thumb).
Through First Nations reservations, over mountains, through rapids and across lakes they finally reach saltwater.
