Wayne McLennan was born in 1954 in an Australian mining town. To avoid going down the mines (like his father and grandfather) he became a bank clerk, a job he hated. So he made two promises to himself: never to stick at one job and to travel as widely as possible.

Since then he has been a professional boxer in Australia, a gold miner in Costa Rica and a fishing-boat skipper in Nicaragua. Other adventures include a gruelling six-month journey – by rowing boat – along the 1, 000 miles of coast from Seattle to Alaska, and a stint on board an Alaskan fishing trawler. He encounters compelling individuals along the way: men who refuse to give in to the conformity and comforts of modern life, choosing instead lonely and, often, dangerous ways of living.
