George Back joined the Royal Navy in 1808 at age 11. After five years as a prisoner of Napoleon, he joined John Franklin on three major expeditions, mapping huge swathes of the Arctic under brutal conditions. Fortunately for Back, he did not join Franklin’s final, ill-fated expedition, instead leading his own exploration of the Back River. His heroic return upstream, hauling his boats up 83 sets of rapids, is one of the greatest-ever feats of polar exploration and endurance. On his final expedition, Back’s ship spent 10 months drifting in pack ice; the leaking wreck just made it to Ireland, where Back ran it onto a beach and collapsed.
This is a fascinating, largely untold adventure. Known for his never-say-die attitude, Back was also an accomplished artist and writer. His was an extraordinary life, and his story is a gripping read.
