First Field Guide: Birds: Whether you are watching birds in your own backyard, taking a vacation at the shore, or hiking in the mountains, this book will help you look at birds the way a naturalist does. The book is divided into four parts:
Part 1: The World of birds: Tells you how birds are named, what makes them so perfectly suited to life in the air, how they migrate, where they lay their eggs, and how they raise their young.
Part 2: How to look at birds: Gives you the information you need to begin identifying birds; provides fascinating facts about birds' colors, shapes, bills, and songs; explains the difference between a bird's range and its habitat; and describes the plights of several endangered species.
Part 3: The field guide: Includes detailed descriptions, range maps, and dramatic photographs of 50 common North American birds. In addition, this section provides helpful shorter descriptions accompanied by photographs of 125 other important species.
Part 4: The reference section: At the back of the book includes an illustrated list of the 50 state birds; a helpful glossary of technical terms used by ornithologists; lists of useful books, videos, CD's, Web sites, and organizations; and an index of species covered in the Field Guide.
