Travelling Knowledges: Positioning the Immigrant Reader of Aboriginal Literatures in Canada: Most contemporary literary analysis of First Nations literature is based on Euro-centric cultural assumptions that often misread and misunderstand the context of the work it examines. Renate Eigenbrod suggests that approaching this work with an understanding of the nature of an “outsider's” political and social positionality not only encourages non-Aboriginal scholars to understand Aboriginal literatures as social commentary, but also to appreciate their aesthetic richness. In her discussion of fiction, poetry, plays, and essays, Eigenbrod addresses issues of cultural literacy, the positioning of literary criticism, construction of boundaries, migrant/nomad contexts, and the fluidity of reading as a border-crossing movement. An insightful, original, and wide-ranging book, Travelling Knowledges looks at the work of several Aboriginal writers, including Louise Halfe, Maurice Kenny, Thomas King, Basil Johnston, Emma Lee Warrior, Richard Wagamese, Ruby Slipperjack, Lee Maracle, Jeanette Armstrong, and Armand Ruffo, among several others.
