Native Peoples: The Canadian Experience: Native Peoples includes 26 chapters by anthropologists and ethnohistorians. Seven culture areas are defined: Arctic, Eastern Subarctic, Western Subarctic, Eastern Woodlands, Plains, Plateau, and Northwest Coast. Each of the seven regions is surveyed in an introductory chapter, as well as by in-depth chapters on specific Native groups – for example, the James Bay Cree, the Blackfoot, the Secwepemc. The contributors discuss the history of the people, the impact of European contact, Aboriginal social traditions, life ways, and material culture, and also tell of their personal fieldwork experiences among the peoples they have studied. The chapters also include recommended readings and listings of Web sites for the various Native groups. Introductory chapters consider the prehistory and the linguistic and archaeological evidence of the diversity of this country's Aboriginal peoples, and a concluding chapter looks at future prospects for Canada's first peoples.
