Canada's Aboriginal peoples have been the target of the processes of integration and assimilation for many generations. Now, thanks to a vibrant cultural renaissance and renewed political strength, the First Nations are making it clear they want to have a say in determining their place in Canadian society.

This book is an appeal to First Nations leaders in Canada to promote integration. Non-Aboriginals need to be educated about Native ways because the ancient sacred ways have much to offer. The traditional Indigenous reverence for the Earth and natural phenomena promoted harmony among all living things and assured a perpetual availability of natural resources. This form of integrated education can only be undertaken by Indigenous people because they alone possess traditional knowledge.

For thousands of years the Stoney people gained an education from the tribal elders which fitted them to live with pride and confidence on this Great Island ... a sound education in the three Rs has become essential for survival. In my father's time this was not so.... Today in schooling we need the best available - plus ... we [must] integrate the wisdom of our culture with the knowlege of the technolgy of the other culture - Chief John Snow, 1977: 153-156.

A few decades ago the Indigenous People of Canada were at an educational crossroads; should they try to maintain their traditional way of life or give in to the pressures of assimilation? It now appears they have made their decision. They will not retreat to the past, neither will they blindly fold into the structures of dominant society. Instead, as Chief John Snow has suggested, they will maintain their traditional cultural distinctives and integrate into their worldview what they deem to be useful from "the other culture." The process through which this fusion will hopefully come about is education.
