The Rabbit and the Turtle
Reviewed: August 20, 2008
By: Eric Carle
Publisher: Orchard Books / Scholastic Inc.
28 pages, $18.99
I haven’t seen anything by this author/illustrator in some time, but
he’s back now with reinterpretations of eleven of Aesop’s Fables.
These have appeared before, in two other books published between 1980 and 1988,
but have not been collected in this volume before.
Each story is told in simple prose on the left hand of a double page spread,
while the right hand page is one of Carle’s expansive and vibrantly coloured
paintings illustrating a key moment from the story. The moral of each story
is printed in colour below each text page.
Contents of this edition are: the lion and the mouse, the wolf and the dog,
the fox and the crane, the cat and the mouse, the monkey and the fox, the rabbit
and the turtle, the wolf and the lamb, the frog and the ox, the bluebird and
the peacocks, the fox and the crow, the grasshopper and the ants.
