On Thursday 2nd April 1992 a team of five men set off for the Geomagnetic North Pole. They were to cover a distance of 276 miles, over some of the most lonely, wild and dangerous terrain in the world, in temperatures that ranged between -40 and-58 degrees centigrade windchill.

The twenty-day expedition was not without its dramas. The team had to contend with maps that gave little indication as to land undulation; frostbit and other problems with feet, muscles, joints and teeth; camera equipment which frequently froze up; and a constant threat from polar bears. Surviving on only 5 000 calories per day, each man lost over 20 lbs in weight. By the end of the journey the team was down to one last meal of emergency rations, and the pack ice was breaking up to create huge tracts of open water truly a race against time.
