Concerned by the rapid loss of pristine wilderness in the Rockies, Heuer wanted to find out first-hand whether the dream of creating a network of preserved habitat for wildlife could be made reality. His measure would be the presence of grizzly bears, the animal most vulnerable to the pressure of human development.

Accompanied by occasional human companions and a remarkable border collie named Webster, Heuer walked, skied, and canoed along the spine of the Rocky Mountains from south to north.

Along the way, he faced personal problems, including the breakup of his relationship with the woman who had planned the hike with him, and learned how to win the support of hunters, ranchers, and others with a stake in wild lands.

Above all, he battled through and overcame immense physical challenges: gruelling climbs, ferocious storms, avalanches, rivers in full flood.

And then there were grizzlies.
