Yukon Fur Bearers

The early development of the fur trade in the Yukon centered around the Indian middlemen from outside the Territory. Coastal Tlingit tribes, particularly the Chilkats, from the area of present day Haines, Alaska, controlled trade between Indians of the Yukon and the Pacific Northwest trading posts of the Russian-American company and rival American traders. This control was effective because the Tlingits were able to control the few passes through the coast mountains, restricting passage of white traders inland and preventing the inland Athapascan Indians from journeying to the coast to trade directly with the whites.

Today, most traplines are run by Indians, with a few whites here and there. Regulations stipulate that all trappers must trap only in areas assigned to them as “registered traplines” with the exception of three group areas assigned to the people of Old Crow, Fort McPherson and Ross River. These group areas are controlled by an elected “group leader”.
