Arctic Imperative is Canada Losing the North?
Back Cover
Front Cover

The Age of the Arctic is approaching, and Canada has no coherent policy with which to meet it. Canadian governments have traditionally adopted a piecemeal approach to the far North, failing to recognize that issues they have dealt with separately – sovereignty, security, economic development, Star Wars – require integration into a comprehensive policy. In this book John Honderich mounts a persuasive argument that the time has come for such integration, for the development of a new, 'made-in-Canada' policy that will meet the challenge of the far North. Honderich issues a clarion call to all those committed to Canadian sovereignty. Without a complete reappraisal of our security policy, he warns, Canada's Arctic may well become a new militarized area for superpower tensions or, worse, a staging ground for part of Star Wars. If these developments are to be avoided, the time for a dramatic new approach in now.
