“I think if Mary will allow me. I will send you home Harry Graham's journal, which is a wonderful work he has presented us with and will tell you every detail.” So wrote Lord Minto, Governor General of Canada, to his brother in November 1900.

In that year, the Canadian Northwest was in turmoil. The precise location of the boundary between the Yukon and Alaska was in hot dispute. And thousands of Yukon gold seekers believed that politicians in Ottawa were making a financial killing in land speculation and mining concession grants.

To get a first-hand look at the situation, the new Governor General of Canada, Lord Minto, with his family and staff – the Comptroller of the Household, the Private Secretary and the Aide-de-Camp (Harry Graham) – headed west on a 10,000-mile journey across the Dominion and back.

Packed with now-odd but still fascination facts about people and places along the way, Graham's account of the journey delightfully re-creates the banality of official receptions and officious dignitaries, as well as the banter of the Governor General's staff as train and ship took them ever closer to the fabled land of gold.

The diaries and journals of vice-regal functionaries are usually dull reading, skimpy of fact and skimpier of anecdote. But occasionally, an observant writer of intelligence and wit records events significant in the shaping of a nation in a way that combines information with readability. Harry Graham was such a writer. Across Canada and the Klondyke is such a work.
