In February 1937, Al Lewis was a naïve 22-year-old Alberta farm boy looking for work. When the opportunity arose to join a friend on a trapline in the Wilderness Waterway of the Nahanni Valley, Al ignored his lack of experience and went. For four months Lewis and Harry Vandaele survived the extreme cold and deep snow with only a canvas tent, minimal supplies, two dogs, and their exuberance for life. At spring breakup in June the two men made their plans to leave the bush. Prairie upbringings and ignorance of river travel led them to risk the flood-swollen South Nahanni River rather than wait for a plane to fly them out. Early in the morning on June 3, Lewis and Vandaele loaded a handmade five log raft with their few supplies and the two dogs and set out to pass through Hell's Gate and the four canyons.
