Alphabeasts deserves to be mentioned this week just because it’s
delightful. Wallace Edwards has provided us with a magically realistic house
in which an alphabet of animals can be found doing the most improbable things.
A is for Alligator, awake from a dream (see the cover image)
B is for Bat, slurping ice cream (bat hovering over still-life
dish)
C is for Cat, who reflects on itself (seeing a tiger in the mirror)
And so it goes. There are a lot of things to examine in each
picture. Whole stories could be developed from each watercolour and coloured
pencil image in this slightly oversized hardcover.
